The Sun of Margarita / 10 Sep 2017 | the last 40 years meditation has become established in the modern western culture and been prescribed by physicians and practiced by everyone from business men, artists, and scientists, to students, teachers, military and, at one point promising, political. The congressman from Ohio, Tim Ryan meditates every morning and has become a big supporter of Mindfulness and meditation, as described in his book «A Mindful Nation: How a simple practice can help us reduce stress, improve performance, and recapture the American spirit» (A mindful nation: how a simple practice can help us reduce stress, improve our performance, and recapture the american spirit).
The word Mindfulness is the closest translation to English that is made to the term Samma-Sati in the pali language, which means «the noble path of memory, or remembrar», whose meaning in Spanish is that of mindfulness. Technique that is born of meditation buddhist Vipassana.
Despite the growing popularity of meditation, the common myths about the practice are a barrier that stops a lot of people to try practicing meditation and receiving its profound benefits for the body, mind and spirit. Then disipamos seven of the most common myths of meditation.
·Meditation is difficult.
The truth:
This myth is rooted in the image of meditation as an esoteric practice reserved only to the saints, holy men and spiritual adepts. In reality, when you receive the statement by a professor knowledgeable of the subject matter and experience, meditation is easy and fun to learn. The techniques can be as simple as focusing on breathing or repeating a mantra in silence. One of the reasons why meditation may seem difficult is that we try to concentrate too much, we are too attached to the results, or we are not confident to do it well.
·To put the mind blank.
The truth:
This may be the myth number one about meditation and is the cause of a lot of people leave because of mere frustration. Meditation isn’t about stopping your thoughts or trying to put your mind blank, both of these approaches only create stress and more noise of chatter, internal. We can not stop or control our thoughts but we can decide how much attention we give them. Even if we can’t impose quiet on our mind, through meditation we can find the quiet that already exists in the space between our thoughts. This space between thoughts is pure consciousness, pure silence and authentic peace .
·It takes years of meditation to get any benefit.
The truth:
The benefits of meditation are both immediate and long-term.
You can begin to experience its benefits the first time you sit down to meditate and in the first few days of daily practice. Many scientific studies provide evidence that meditation has profound effects on the physiology of mind-body in just a few weeks of practice.
For example, a prominent study conducted by the University of Harvard and the General Hospital of Massachusetts found that in just eight weeks of meditation not only helped people experience decreased anxiety and greater feelings of calm; it also produced growth in areas of the brain associated with memory, empathy, self-awareness and the regulation of stress.
·To meditate it takes a lot of time.
The truth:
If you feel that your schedule is too full, remember that even a few minutes of meditation are better than none. We encourage you to not you would persuade yourself not to meditate alone because it is a bit late or you feel too sleepy.
Paradoxically, when we meditate regularly, we have more time. To meditate we enter and we leave the ground devoid of space and time of consciousness… the state of pure attention which is the source of all that manifests in the universe. Our breathing and our heart rate slow down, our blood pressure lowers, and our body decreases the production of stress hormones and other chemicals that accelerate the aging process and give us the subjective feeling that «we’re running out of time».
In meditation, we are in a state of alert calm that is extremely energizing to the body and the mind.
