Sex and meditation – La Gaceta Tucumán

Each time become more and more evident the benefits of the eastern teachings for our health. However, western medicine still maintains some resistance and scepticism in recognition of these contributions.

Many researches have demonstrated the effectiveness of certain ancient practices -meditation, for example – to address sexual dysfunction. Part of these findings are referred to it by the science popularizer Pere Estupinyà in his book “The science of sex”.

Unit body-and-mind

Lori Brotto, a psychologist and a canadian in charge of the Laboratory of Sexual Health, University of British Columbia Vancouver, has researched for years the effects of meditation on female sexuality. Argues that this and other eastern practices –tantrism for example – can improve certain cases of female sexual dysfunction and to be incorporated as part of the therapies.

The main effect that meditation produces –overlooked, almost always, by the sexual medicine contemporary – is to strengthen the unity between body and mind, and increase the sensitivity.

In this regard, many women whose genitals still work perfectly, they are yet unable to let go of the mind and connect with the excitation physics. Other, in spite of reaching orgasm, do not feel satisfied. As if I’m missing some wisdom and control over the reactions of her own body.

Significant improvements

In the framework of their research, Brotto recruited women who consulted for low sexual desire or difficulties in arousal. After a few weeks of meditation sessions of 90 minutes were recorded significant improvements in lubrication and in the subjective perception of sexual desire, in most cases. Something similar happened in another of their studies with women who had undergone a cervical cancer and, therefore, had sexual difficulties. And also in groups of women who were traumatized by having suffered sexual abuse in the past.

When analyzing the brain activity during meditation, there is a greater activity in areas associated with attention and emotional response. It is likely that this, together with the undoubted relaxation generated by this practice, help people to bow down to an attitude more oriented to pleasure.
