“We’re living in a society that constantly demands so much time from us, so it’s important for us to create some sort of getaway,” said Candin Garner, lead massage therapist at HMFH. “We provide outlets for people to be able to combat that stress and create a balance in their lives.”
Garner strives to provide her massage clients with a soothing ambience using lighting and music, and tailors her massage techniques to what’s comfortable for each individual.
“(We) check in with them, make sure that they’re comfortable with that, utilizing heat and different modalities to give them what they’re looking for and what they need on a medical basis to be able to relax and trust the environment,” she explained.
Similarly, Yoga Therapist Laure Sears uses an individualized approach designed to give each specific person what they need during instruction for her classes and individual sessions.
“It’s not so much what the pose should look like, it’s what the pose is for you,” she said. “So it’s your personal way of moving your body.”
Focusing on the breath is a big part of practicing yoga, and consciously breathing from your diaphragm instead of your chest helps activate what Sears called the nervous system’s “rest and relaxation response.”
“I think the concept of breathing adequately is so underestimated and unappreciated,” said Garner, who uses breathing techniques during massage therapy as well. “I want to incorporate that into our treatment so that people can then even subconsciously take these techniques and then place it into their everyday movement.”
Free guest passes are available online for those who want to try out the variety of services and amenities available at HMFH, from a more traditional gym set up to unique clinical services and “lifestyle enhancement” training.
