Reasons to start practicing mindfulness during sex – Pajama Surf

The mindfulness, a type of focused meditation on the full awareness of the body sensations, has started to be used as a support tool in medical treatments, neurological, psychiatric, and psychological. Thanks to that helps to release the emotional stresses and cognitive specialists in sexual health, return to the principles of meditation mindfulness.

Considering that a sexual practice, from the autoerotismo to the same sex, requires focused attention on the bodily sensations (the taste of the fluids, the aroma of sweat, the sound of pleasure, the view of the universe, and the touch of Uniqueness), can be considered as a kind of extrapolation innate and natural meditation mindfulness. In fact, according to the data of a research done in Brown University in the US, on sexual arousal, the control group who took a course for 3 months of meditation mindfulness reported greater sexual arousal in a shorter period than usual.

While this does not mean that this meditative practice to be a kind of drug to increase the eroticism in the individual, it is a method that helps to highlight that which already exists in the psyche and the human body. For the main author of the research, Gina Silverstein, the key lies in having increased awareness. That is to say that the sex mindfulness relates to the ability to observe and describe what is happening both in the body as in the mind without judging feelings as “good” or “bad”, or have the need to change the emotions arising. It is, in other words, able to “turn off the auto mode” at the time of making any sexual practice.

In fact, at the neurological level increases the gray matter in the insular cortex of the brain, resulting in a greater intensity in the quality of orgasms. This happens thanks to the fact that the practice of mindfulness helps regulate stress levels, facilitating greater attention in all areas of life –including that of the pleasure. So that instead of considering the orgasm as an end, promotes to enjoy the bodily sensations that arise throughout the sexual act. In the words of Marsha Lucas, a neuropsychologist and author of Rewire your Brain for Love: “The orgasm is a good thing, but there is something more than just a friction genital. The orgasm can obscure everything else that is on the way. And the mindfulness helps you to see what more is there”.

Luke mentions that it may sound very easy to apply this method of meditation during sex; however, it can get complicated when unconsciously we think in comparisons of our body, or performance with those of porn actors, when we wonder if anyone can hear us or with ideas on what we should be doing. For this reason, the training of the meditation helps to focus attention on the pleasure, reducing the impact of other intrusive thoughts that may distract us from the here and now.

In conclusion, the ability to maintain the connection of the mind and body in the here and now allows you to release thoughts or irrational beliefs that undermine the pleasure of existence itself.
