One of the best kept secrets of China in the 90’s, was a Falun Dafa. Whether you call it meditation practice, spiritual discipline, or a type of qigong, approximately 100 million people in China practiced by mid-1999.
However, despite the fact that 1 in every 13 chinese people practiced this discipline from the Buddha School, it was almost unknown outside of China, until the Chinese Communist Party (Ccp) banned it in July 1999 and launched a persecution campaign of great scope that continues until today.
A key component of the campaign of persecution of the Ccp was to fill in with false propaganda through radial canals, newspapers and diplomatic means. Particularly the foreign press was one of the great whites who said the communist regime to defame Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong), since outside of China do not have any other source of information. That is why the first and often the only reference on this discipline ancestral to some people outside of China, it was an image intentionally distorted by agents and the media controlled by the Ccp.
In other words, many of the things that circulate -even today – by the web about Falun Dafa, may be inaccurate.
Mind and body
Falun Dafa refines the body and nurtures the mind, which makes it difficult for western terminology to classify it in a clear way. What is a spiritual practice, or are physical exercises? The correct answer is “yes”, since both are an integral part of Falun Dafa.
There are five exercises. Four are made of foot, and the other is a meditation with the legs crossed. Soft and slow, they have names such as “passing Through the two ends cosmic” (third year) and “Circulation heavenly Falun” (fourth year). People often warn feel renewed or energized after them.
The key point of the teachings: Falun Dafa believes that the fundamental principles of the universe is “Zhen-Shan-Ren”. “Zhen” is translated as truth and real. “Shan” is kindness, compassion and benevolence. “Ren” is tolerance, patience and endurance. The teachings point out these points in great depth.
For thousands of years in China, spiritual practices, were transmitted secretly from master to disciple.
The Master of Falun Dafa, Li Hongzhi, he learned the practice privately, and then went out to teach it to everyone who would like to learn it, starting in may of 1992.
Mr. Li had crossed the whole of China towards the end of 1994. Offered 54 seminars of 8 to 10 days of duration, where he was a guest. Gave readings on the principles, taught the exercises and answered questions on the last day of each seminar.
At the beginning, only a few hundreds of people attending each seminar, but at the end of 1994, the conference halls with capacity of several thousands will be filled through invitations spread from person to person.
People spoke to family, friends and neighbors, on how were alleviated or disappeared, their ailments, from skin conditions to heart problems. He also recounted how following the teachings led them to improve their relationships with spouses, co-workers, and generally, a mental state calm and relaxed.
The practice continued to grow by word of mouth, from the tens of thousands of people that listened to live readings of Mr. Li between 1992 and 1994, tens of millions for mid-1999. The practitioners included older and younger people, peasants and university professors, and even generals and members of the Communist Party.
Practice sites were in public parks throughout China. Attendees volunteers taught the movements to the newcomers, and they had a tape or a CD player to listen to the music that accompanies the exercises.
After doing the exercises together, while some practitioners went to work, some would sit and read the main book “Zhuan Falun, written by Mr. Li. Cultivate the mind and character, comes through the study of this book, and other teachings, -texts that are freely available on the Internet— and then apply what you have learned in everyday life.
The practitioners of Falun Dafa took the discipline with them when they traveled outside of China to study in universities or work in companies. That is why some places invited Mr. Li to give lectures. For example, he gave a seminar is complete in Sweden at the beginning of 1995 and conferences, organized by students in the united States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and other places, before the Ccp began its persecution campaign in 1999.
The web site www.falundafa.org today has lists of sites of practice regular in more than 70 countries. There they state: “All activities of Falun Dafa are free”.
The number of people practicing out of China grows while continuing the prohibition, and the persecution in China, which for nearly 70 years, is ruled by a communist regime and an atheist. The evidence of growth is anecdotal, since the exact numbers are not stored by anyone, and people are free to practice or not, to each their own.
