Program using music to help those…

LA CROSSE, Wis. – A program that uses music to help those with dementia will be available to a larger audience locally and was featured at a kick-off event Saturday afternoon.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Western Wisconsin is teaming up with the La Crosse Public Library to provide the Music & Memory Program to people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia and their caregivers.

ADRC of Western Wisconsin supervisor Cheryl Neubauer said the program is already in nursing homes across the state, but will now also be available to the estimated 70-80 percent of people living with dementia who still live at home.

Participants are given an iPod Shuffle with personalized music. Neubauer said making sure the music means something to participants is important.

“So it takes them back in time. It allows them to communicate better with family and friends, and kind of just relax and enjoy,” she said. “It’s also been shown to decrease anxiety and decrease agitation for people.”

An informational meeting was held at the La Crosse Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information on the program, you can call the ADRC of Western Wisconsin at 608-785-5700.
