Known for its all year round sunshine, glamorous beaches and blue waters the French Riviera or Côte d’Azur in the south of France was our destination.
In the beautiful town of Mandelieu-la-Napoule stands the four-star Mimozas Resort Cannes separated by just 7km of coastline or a short 10 minute drive to the heart of the town.
At around a half hour drive from Nice Airport the hotel can arrange a special resort taxi fare of 50 euros each way or you can take the bus, train or maybe hire a car for the duration of your trip.
On arrival at the resort be prepared to be captured by the beauty of the magnificent lake surrounded by apartments.
Set on 7 hectares of land the resort is huge! It has just over 280 apartments, a pool area, spa, two restaurants and a bar and café, multi-sports facilities including tennis courts, basketball, table tennis, as well as a children’s playground.
There are also plenty of seating areas around the resort where you can stop to take in the sublime views.
The one bedroom apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, dining area, living room with TV and DVD, separate toilet, a bath and shower, bedroom, washing machine and of course your very own terrace.
Other accommodation types include large studio and two and three bed apartments.
On arrival my husband and I were shown to our room on the second floor with spectacular views of the lake, and mountains in the distance.
A quick freshen up and we headed down to the hotel bar for a drink and some lunch starting with a gourmet goats cheese salad to share. The melted goats cheese was on a thin grilled roll on a bed of salad, sundried tomatoes, cucumber and croutons with a light dressing.
A luscious salad which would be divine in the hot summer months.
This was followed by a lightly spiced creamy pasta with long sliced courgettes. Delicious and filling.
The dessert trio tipped us over the edge and included a chocolate cake soufflé, brownie and a mini cream donut.
We pondered around the resort but it was unusually chilly for that time of the year so opted to head indoors and relax in the apartment.
Be advised in the low season locals close up and getaway, so the nearest open shop or restaurant can often be far and require a car.
The next day, rested and ready to go we headed down for a continental breakfast – selection of cereals, juices, breads, cheeses, fruits, yogurt, croissants and other pastries.
Into Cannes and just a short 15 minutes on a boat from the Port of Cannes is the spectacular island of Sainte Marguerite.
With breathtaking views, forest walks and blue-green waters around the National Trust site, this is one place you can go back to.
At just under 15 Euros a trip and with boats coming and going every hour there is much to explore including a fort on the tip of the island, ruins from the 18 century, a lake, kilometres of beach and even a chance to do water sports once it gets hotter.
Back in Cannes and you can walk down La Croissete if you’re a designer king or queen where there’s everything from Prada and Miu Miu to Chanel.
Preparations were in full swing for the 70th Cannes Film Festival and while there are no A-listers to catch a glimpse of yet, you can see hand prints of celebrities including Sylvester Stallone, Cameron Diaz and Meryl Streep.
And of course there is no way you can miss the stunning yachts lined up along the docks and the gorgeous beach.
Be advised if you dare to walk along the coast back to Mandelieu-la-Napoule then it is a heart stopping near enough two hour walk. Pleasant but not after a full day walking!
Back at the hotel it was a three course meal for dinner starting with mozzarella and tomato salad with grilled aubergines, courgette and mushrooms. One word…scrumptious!
Up next chef Alex cooked up a spicy lentil curry with vegetables – mouthwatering and a compliment to the chef and a definite one to add on the menu.
Then a sharing dessert of pear crumble with melted chocolate. Divine!
On the final day luckily we had booked in a massage as it was raining (which I might add is unusual).
The serenity of a spa treatment room, calm and soothing music, was all we needed to shut out the downpours.
I opted for the 60 minute Massage Lomi-Lomi (79 Euros) where a masseuse uses the forearm giving that extra bit of pressure over the Relaxing Massage (79 Euros), which is also on the spa menu.
For those who really want to feel some pressure there’s a Swedish massage (89 Euros) or a Deep Tissue Massage (99 Euros) , the latter which my husband opted for.
Needless to say we were both very relaxed and glad we had left it until the last day to remove all the pain from the previous few days of miles and miles of walking!
Outside the resort there are also a wealth of options from a trip over to St Marguerite’s Island, shopping in Cannes, a train journey to Monte Carlo or to St Tropez.
It’s the perfect place for people who want to escape their busy lives to relax and unwind or for a couples retreat.
