I was reading an article the other day about meditation and how it’s suppose to be good for your overall health. I mentioned it to a friend and she says she does it and swears by it.
She says since taking up the practice of meditation she’s experienced an overall wellness that she’s never felt before. She used the term, “more well centered.”
She’s also been able to get off some of the medications she was on (after getting the go-ahead from her doctor of course) – specifically her high blood pressure medicine.
When I asked her more about it she said the most important piece for her was finding that “quiet place” she could go to – where there would be no interruptions; no nothing.
She calls it “that one special place she can go to and escape from the real world and all its demands – a place to be by herself.”
And that’s when I told my friend about my “reading rock” when I was a kid. It’s a big rock on the farm in the middle of the cattle pasture that I would bike to.
That was the one place I would go to and be (or do) whatever I wanted to be (or do). I was only limited by my imagination.
Some days I would just sit and read. Other days I would battle knights in shining armor, or be stranded on a deserted island fending off sharks and pirates.
That’s when she told me that what I was doing was actually practicing an elementary form meditation. I was escaping to another world.
Well, I don’t know if I would call what I did meditation or not, but I do remember doing some of my best thinking at that rock.
The point of all this is, I agree with my friend. Everyone needs to find that “quiet place.” That special place where you can be by yourself and read, or think, or just pretend.
In this day-in-age of social media, and with the constant bombardment of information, we all need to do a better job of “unplugging” – myself included.
So my challenge to you is to go out and find your quiet place and meditate for a bit. And while you’re dong that, I’ll be driving to the farm to get reacquainted with my reading rock.
