ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) – This Friday, May 5, people who want to have a different type of First Friday experience are invited to try the Cinco de Mayo Party in the Gallery in the Warehouse Theatre at 3 Central Avenue in Wellsboro.
Decorating the Gallery will be colorful, handmade tissue flowers. There will be dancing to the recorded, classic Latin-American music of Mexico and fresh, homemade tamales, chips with homemade salsa and guacamole to eat.
Yolie Canales, a Mexican American who was born and raised in the United States and now lives in Wellsboro, is hosting the party. “Its all about having fun,” Canales said.
On Wednesday, May 3, the ladies will begin making the tamales. “I know people think of them as hot tamales but believe me they are not spicy and taste really good,” she said. Her tamales are made with pork loin and shoulder, ‘It takes a lot of time to make them and requires a lot of helping hands. It took me 10 years before I made an entire batch by myself without any help from my father,” she said.
To go along with the tamales, Canales is also making a special Latino hot sauce.
Margaritas will also be on the menu. “I won’t be adding any alcohol to my Margaritas, so people who want Tequila should bring their own,” said Canales. Bottled water will also be available for sale.
“People are welcome to bring their own snacks and beverages, too. We are setting up tables and chairs so those who just want to relax, talk, enjoy the music and food can,” she added.
For those who want to know what to wear – dungarees topped with a colorful blouse or shirt works. “Anything colorful works,” said Canales.
Admission to the Cinco de Mayo Party is $7 per person at the door. The cost for a tamale is $1.
The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. wrap-up around 10 p.m. For anyone interested in trying a tamale, you are encouraged to arrive early.
